ok i got busy

ok for a few different reasons i was in the mindset that my 305 had spun a rod bearing, tore up valve train and got the piston rings... the worst case scenario. now, all of this was speculation because i have never heard rod knock and the car has a heavy knock to it, but nothing like i hear rod knock is suppose to be. like i said, i have no idea because i've never heard this sound before. well i talked to a friend today and we've almost decided that it's not rod knock, just thinking it possibly has a bent lifter rod or more. it does have a slight "tick" sound at a steady rate at idle, but as you get into the rpm's, probably around 2 - 2.5 grand i'll get a heavy "clunk" sound. car has bit of a miss, nothing really bad. i drove it to our new place and i didn't notice any power/tq differences (that are noticeable by the seat of the pants), but i didn't really get on it either. also, back when we broke the motor free, we poured more then enough oil in figuring that the motor was shot anyway. so now on to the questions.

will this overfilling create excessive exhaust smoke? because the car is currently smoking pretty good. not at idle, but if i push the rpms up to around 3 grand and let off abruptly and at around 1500 pump the gas again it'll throw out a plumb of smoke. is this due to excess oil?

also, as the car is idling, randomly it will drop rpm's to about 200 and obviously spit and sputter and just as it's about to die it'll throw out a pretty good puff of pure black smoke, almost a heavy soot. i'm assuming this is fuel related?

i know we had a heated discussion earlier about a 350 swap and i still want the 350, but as mentioned earlier i really am on a tight budget so if i can get away with a head replacement and accessories on this car it'll be completely fine with me. i just figured if i was going to have to get a new engine or rebuild the current then i would just stick something a little more beefy in there.

all in all, i'm kind of clueless as to what to expect here. what are the chances that serious damage was done due to seizure? any diagnosis methods are extremely helpful here.

Smoke is bad rings

Idle/sputter could be a number of things

ok, we were figuring that it was the rings, but i just wanted to make sure that wasn't a possibility because i'm certain that i have read somewhere about the excess oil. it probably wasn't true, but i do know that i have read it.

rod bearing or just lifter(s)/push rod(s)?

any suggestions where to go?

thanks.

oh and i forgot to mention that the oil was clean.

Overfilling lets the crank slap the oil in the pan. This eats power and aerates your oil severely reducing its lubricating ability

It shouldnt smoke unless its overflowing from the valve covers

That would require a rebuild. Longblock swap would be cheaper
