brake question...

Posted By: LeadFootedRacer On: 10-20-2008 @ 20:43:17         Reply | Edit
shopping brakes for the bird. not purchasing yet, but i kinda like to do all my homework WAY ahead of time.

well i'm thinking wilwood all the way around, figurin they make a direct bolt on kit for the 9" ford i'm running, AND offer the matching kit for the stock 3rd gen spindles.

now my question is, what is the biggest setup i can run inside a 15" rim?

fronts are 15x4, so that may not be an issue, but the rears are 15x15, and the entire setup is incased inside the rim.

i looked on TGO breifly. saw nothing. everyone is talking about 16" or bigger wheels, or STOCK wheels. i'm more concerned with the prostars. i'm not sure what they measure or what fits. wilwood's site tells me the rotor diameter, but that doesn't include the caliper.

I have the 4 piston Wilwood setup on my Camaro. I have the kit for the 9" that I have on the car. I love the brakes. The parking brake is a drum on the inside so you have no ugly parking brake sticking out like on the Bear setup. I run an adjustable proportioning valve for the rear and if I turn it all the way up, I have no problem locking up the rear. Plenty of stoping power. Also, I'm sure they will fit on 15" wheels. I will measure tommorrow to make sure but I'm 99.99999% sure they will work.

Think this is also something I'm going to do this winter. I just can't see spending $1200+ just for front brakes. Way I see it, I'm going to get brakes from another car. The (12" rotor) 1le brakes and (12" rotor) c4 will fit under a 15" wheel. Probably should either talk to or look at posts from ed (ebmiller88) on thirdgen.org or see his website http://www.flynbye.com/catalog/c1_p1.html Cheapest way for replacement parts would be LS1 brakes all the way around, but I a believe a 16" wheel would be the min for the fronts. What I'd like to do is c5 rotors and LS1 calipers up front and LS1 in the back. Hopefully a 1.5" wheel spacer/adapter will push my 15x4 fronts out far enough to clear the calipers on the 12.75" rotors.

C4 non HD brakes are the biggest stockers you can swap inside 15" wheels

Upgrade OEM until weight becomes an issue then go with aftermarket

I just checked my car and 15's will fit with no problem at all. I wouldn't doubt if 14's would fit.
