Electric Hatch Release

Pocket, I ran into some wiring problems and was giong to replace the engine wire harness, but think I've found the wires I need. I've done away with the computer, so I think probably 95% of the wires under the hood can go away. Anyhow, hooked the starter up this evening just to hear it turn over, if for no other reason. Ran into some trouble there, that's not the reason for the post, but I'll tell about it anyhow. When I hit the switch...nothing. Checked wires on opposite side of the fuse link from the starter on all wires and had power so fuse links okay. Hit the purple wire on the clutch switch with power and the starter engaged, so I know that wire isn't broken. Hit the brown wire with power coming from the alternator to the switch and still nothing. I'm thinking there may be either a cut wire under the dash or in the steering column, or the switch is bad. I'll figure that out later.
My main problem at this point (or at least the problem on my mind) is the rear hatch. Prior to hooking up the battery, the hatch would open and close freely because the electric pull down motor was open. That was all good.
So, I hook up the battery and the motor engages pushing the hatch up, as if I hit the switch on the enside of the car to open it. All good. I go back and click the hatch down and the motor pulls it down. Still all good.
Now the bad part.
I hit the switch on the inside to open the hatch and nothing. I guess maybe the switch is bad, maybe a fuse, I don't know. Never looked any farther at this point. So, I go to the back of the car, pull the license plate down and the lock cylinder is missing. For some reason, the guy that had it sprayed orange paint in it, perhaps to help him see in the hole to disengage the mechanism, I don't know.
My question though, is there a way to open that with the lock cylinder missing?
To top it all off, I locked my keys in the car when I quit this evening. Only good thing is I have a buddy who is pro at B&E into cars with a slim-jim. HA.
Thanks for all your help. [ Edited on 08/18/2008 @ 21:49:54 ] [ Edited on 08/18/2008 @ 21:50:26 ]

Thanks for the info guys. With the missing lock mechanism, I found there's a "key" hole in the back that I could get a medium screwdriver into and turn. Popped the hatch right open...keys released!
The electrical info is also appreciated. I'm almost sure there's either a bad switch or cut wires. The guy I bought the car from put a "new" steering wheel on it. He never did have it running, so I'm wondering if he didn't shmuck something up on the inside. Will look into that later.
Thanks again!
