Tranny identification

Posted By: oldiron On: 07-31-2008 @ 14:06:02         Reply | Edit
Have a 700r4 that needs rebuilt, I am wondering how to tell them apart. The one in the car (86 z)is NOT the same as original. I have no idea which year was installed last time. I didnt do the job.

Are there numbers I can go with on the outside?

Hi Pocket; I realize that search engines are very helpful. The link posted tells me something about how to identify the pan on the various chevy trannies. I can identify them in my sleep, by the pan. I KNOW I HAVE A 700r4.

I have not removed the pan and do NOT KNOW which year it might be. I thought perhaps that some number might exist that I had never looked for. This one seems to have a space for a sticker. But no sticker.

The ones produced before 1987 have a different rebuild kit than those built after 1987. I do know about the aux valve body and once I remove the pan, I will know wether I have one or not. If I do not have one, I will still be wondering what year it is because from 85 back, I dont believe they had an aux valve body. I believe this appeared in 1986. Then disapeared in 87.

I am sure to be wrong about something and am trying real hard not to take everything apart completely before knowing which major overhaul kit to order.

Even though I have worked on MANY older trannies including chevy ford and even chrysler, I have never had a 700r4 apart and am still wondering what year I have because seeing the rebuild kit laying in front of you gives you a darn good idea of what you will find inside. IF ITS THE RIGHT KIT.

It is probably a fact that simply replacing the valve body and rebuilding it like an 87 plus is the right way to go. I believe B&M does this with their kit and it might be the best thing to do.

I was hoping to get a discussion started to learn more.

I believe the only important thing to know is if it's a 1984.5-up. Count how many splines are on the input shaft. 27 spline=not so good, 30 spline=84.5-up which is better. Other than different converter splines, I've herd that older ones will overheat if the converter clutch doesn't lock.
