I got 200rwhp 233rwtq from my old 305, granted it had a 600cfm carb. Basically all I had into it other than the intake and carb was a cam and shorty headers. The cam was just a cheapy summit specd. at 204/214 dur @.050" .420/.442 lift. I put it back in the car at the end of last season and it still ran a 14.4, or 12.7 with the procharger on it. -- 1982 Z28, 383, D-1SC intercooled @ 16.5psi, trick flow heads, solid roller cam, 3.73's, th400,

I don't know much about the TBI.
Check out the www.thirdgen.org message board, it gets a lot more traffic that the 3rd gen section here. --

we founed a good deal on lt1 heads will they fit? and could we use lt1 intake or a intake from a early lt1 that were in the novas that used carbs? and would we have to use the lt1 headers from a lt1 vette? or can we use the l98? we would like to use the l98 so we can use lt -- 1996 trans am m6,project 1988 firebird 305 m5

LT1 heads on a GEN I SBC
http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/tpi/178262-completed-lt1-heads-gen1.html
SBC headers interchange heads
The only constraint is you must use 3rd gen specific headers or they will interfere with practically everything
Do a bit more research
There is a great difference in the GEN I LT1 and the GEN II LT1
Also, why do you think the 350 is more expensive in the first place?
So far I see ported heads (could be anything)
headers
custom exhaust
new clutch
new gears
possible new top end
And a JY LO5 350 TBI from a truck wouldnt be more cost effective?
Swap longblock
Swap accessories
Swap ECM
Drive
Up to around $500 now
Toss in a LT1 cam (roller)

I've been reading the TGO boards a lot latley and I'm seeing a lot of negative feedback from te LT1 cam. Seems that you do have to tune the CPU to get it running right. At least that''s in the sticky about it.
IDK I'm wanting to do it but it looks a little iffy. I'm not going to fuck around with burning my own chips... So I'm leaning towards carb -- Being rebuilt, It'll take a while:

Most people who post on the board post that it runs fine with the stock tune
Cam only mind you
Tuning isnt that bad once you get the hang of it

How much does it cost to get the setup to burn chips. I have all the programs, but I'd need the blank chips and the gadget that actually burns the chip. --

they pop up on TGO rather frequently used so you may want to keep your eyes peeled and save some coin -- "If you have complete control over the damned thing, you're not going fast enough." - Carrol Smith
