Hey guys. I have just pulled the motor outta the gta and wanted some input on what I could do. I would like to install a new cam thats not too ratical but is larger than stock. Heads will be stock, motor will be 30 over and new crank rods and pistons all stock replacements. I am not looking to build 400 horses but want more than factory. Do you recommend a specific header, just information like this. Please give me ideas on what works best that yall have tried. Thanks again for the input I have gotten in the past.

350 TPI i take it?
stock heads? just gunna have them freshened up? (ie. new valve seals, 3 angle valve job, new valve springs)
maybe do a minor port with the heads.
alot of guys will tell you to go to a lt1/lt4 cam. definatley look into some roller rockers.
if your doing .030 over, then obviously they wont be stock pistons, maybe get something with a little dome to increase compression and get a little more ponies out of it.
what are you doing as far as intake? keeping TPI, going carb, or buying an aftermarket injection setup?
if your keeping the TPI, i'd recomend doing something like a minor port of the base and plenum, and then buying some runners.
as far as headers go, i can't suggest you a set, but i can tell you to stay clear of FLOWTECH. i had them on my trans am. granted they were a nice fit, but they were a poorly made header. -- 1987 Trans Am - 5.0 Auto - Flowtech Shorties - Flowmaster American Thunder - Spohn LCA's & Solid Sway Bars - Summit Drop Springs - SOLD

I have the flowtechs and have no problems with them, granted yes the flanges are welded really ugly, but they work fine for my street car . Ya can't go wrong for 110 bucks

thats why i got them. and i got there y pipe to match. y pipe didnt fit so well, but the headers went in nice.
i could never keep the last bolt on the pass head in, nor the front pass, or the 3rd on back on the drivers head.
they always fell out.
HOWEVER, if you buy those special "double" thick header gaskets, the bolts stay in longer.
i saw them and gave it a shot and it worked better than the thinner style normal ones -- 1987 Trans Am - 5.0 Auto - Flowtech Shorties - Flowmaster American Thunder - Spohn LCA's & Solid Sway Bars - Summit Drop Springs - SOLD

My y pipe was a bitch in the sense that the 2 pieces wouldn't slip over one another without the aid of a rubber mallet, but once I got it together everything was snug and fit alright. But I know what ya mean, you get what you pay for I spose. --

Thanks guys for the information. To go back, yes 350 TPI, planning on stock heads that are getting new springs, angle, and seals, looking into new runners and possibly lower plenum. So most of the headers have problems with bolts lossening up, or is that just one or two brands? [ Edited on 06/02/2008 @ 18:10:50 ]

Headers have nothing to do with bolts backing out
Cheapo bolts like to back out frequently but all will sometime or another

Well got motor back from machine shop and started to put it back together to find that the rod bolts wouldn' thold up so just ordered some powdered metal gm rods. I should have ordered them to begin with but you live and learn. I also put in for a set of Edelbrock headers. Thanks guys for the input.

A great combo for a mild build would be:
1.ported base 2.large tube runners 3.Crane Cams 104224-Powermax 2032 Camshaft 4.1 5/8" Hedman headers 5.CAI 6.AFPR 7.shift kit
You will run 13s with a good idle and a lot of torque. Cheap, simple and mild. Just what you are asking for.

dude i had one and the best thing u can do cheaply to make that thing scream is to port and polish the stock runners and base then the sides of the plemium and bore the throtle body inlets to 58mm and slap a 58mm bbk throlte body on there then do all the stuff ur wanten to do but back it up with good headers and exgust the best thing for any engine is to make it breeth in and out best u can and then u can build power out the ass if you want!
