Rusty Header Bolts, Keep Breaking

Posted By: fallenleader1 On: 04-03-2008 @ 17:24:39         Reply | Edit
I have recently decided to change my headers, due to exhaust leaks and other such things "I made a mistake and it went FUBAR"

The bolts are original on an '87 firebird V6, and have rusted so badly that in areas they have actually thinned in diameter, just rotted away.

Anyway, the bolts keep snapping when i remove them, i now need to drill and tap 3-4 bolt holes, Trying to avoid breaking more and having to do those.
Have any ideas? I cannot afford new heads and its more economic to buy a new block for 1,400. Still, too expensive.

try maybe a lil heat with a torch. worked for me when i swapped out my manifolds for headers. i broke 2 bolts. 1 on each side. granted once they were all out, i was able to get the maniflods out of the way and used heat and Vise-Grips to get them out

hmm, good idea, i'm familer with this. hopefully the broken bolts will have enough stub on them for me to use vise grips. I'm sure that at least one will need a little grind to smooth and then drill/tap. sad thing, the block needs lifted for clearence to drill it. so many damn connections.

oh, btw yeah, stock manifolds over to pacesetter headers. they don't seem to make manifolds for both sides. they should last over to my engine swap in the future, old v6 - new v6 "plus different cam"

...cough...

I couldnt GIVE two of these engines away
Ended up throwing them into the scrap bin for the steel weight

Infact, Im pretty sure there are atleast 2 f/s on TGO right now under $300

block needs lifted for clearence to drill it.

Nonsense, get a 90 degree drill and youll have more room than youll ever need to drill those out

Instead of drilling and tapping them, why not drill smaller and use an easy out?

This is speaking from experience...

I was about to say that even if you had to buy heads for a 2.8. Someone would probably just about give them away to get rid of them.

Good Luck

yeah, I thought about used. It's still a floating idea, got a 90degree drill, was going to try it. I always drill smaller to make sure i'm centered, will try the easy out but doubt it will work in this situation.
Well, Let me try the "easiest" solution first, on my way to home depot anyway.

Then I will consider the other options.

It is a 2.8, sad isn't it?

Hose it down with some lube and let it sit for a while before you try to use the easy out tool. If you haven't already done that.

I had a 86 2.8 Camaro 5 speed. I loved it.

Haven't done anything yet, waitin to go pick tools up next week. torch, easy out, Good drillbit, and tap.

You're all very nice, makes me happy to have asked.
My little 2.8 has 136,000 miles and worked fine, burnt the ps pump up because of leak, took 1 year to find replace and 3years to find new pully, going to replace the block eventually but bills come first. keeping the 2.8 because of fuel costs "3.15/gal. in nj" and hoping to find a way to get more performance out of it, keeping it street/drag "for fun". only thing I have found is a new cam.

Anyway, Thank you all. I will post again in a few weeks when i have attempted it.

Very nice? You dont know us very well then

305 TBI is more eco-nom-i-cal and the most ultimate badass engine evarrrrrrrrrrrrrr

PS my 2.8 has 328,000 million miles on it

yeah, 305 is nice, wanted to move to 350 "didn't know the 305 was economic" only problem is the cost of the swap, the 2.8 would be mostly plug and play, plus the damn things are die hard. My 2.8 with its miles passed NJ State inspection only a few years ago, then it got a light exhaust leak at the head/headers gasket, needed a new muffler, and got a psteering leak "burnt the pump" only last year i got the thing running again, after sitting for more than a year, needed to replace batt. wouldn't take charge cuz sat too long and went bad"far as my charger said"

then i broke it. now i go to el cheapo "home depot" mid next week. see ya then.

328,000 million miles jon? isnt that a little far fetched?

and isnt 328,000 million miles trillions of miles?

i'd buy maybe 328,000 miles, but not 328,000,000,000,000 miles.

I'm at the point, broke too many.

Buying a new firebird, 3rd gen. around 1987 305-350 and hopefully manual.

Going to take everything good out of this, like my new carpet. and dump it into the next.

If you get a Manual it will be a 305 unless someone swapped in a 350.

Good Luck.

ok, thats ok. where do i find one for 1,500 around 75mile radius of new jersey. no websites been able to help me.

Also, one car I found, had a broken odometer. How is that fixed? And is it legal to sell it like that?
[ Edited on 04/18/2008 @ 01:48:23 ]

Posted By: Pocket On: 04-18-2008 @ 11:27:19     Reply | Top | Edit
Its legal only if its clearly stated that it was broken

Im guessing its a camaro since they often have that problem

Issues with speedo/odo revolve around the same parts everytime

VSS sensor, VSS gear (matched to rearend ratio), speedo cable (cable driven only), speedo unit broke

If its a camaro its often the cable is broken

One final note, why is noone ever willing to travel for a car? Just because its 4-8 hours away doesnt mean its out of reach

I will, if it will make the drive home. It can be cheaper by a lot, good cheap car, plus a overnight vacation.

It was a firebird, and was sold. Stupid websites don't take sold cars off. just leave them there to irritate me.

P.S. I started looking at cars up to 200 miles away. Hard to do though, drive 4hrs, see a car that the condition was lied about, then drive home. Also got friends scouring central jersey looking for a nice ass, long nose, maybe T-tops.

Watch TGO and ebay
Search craigslist online
Dont bother with cars that dont have lots of pics and an owner willing to take more

oh, i know definatly. Bought my first firebird with a cracked steering column, 100 for me to replace it. lost the little high-beam clip that pushes the rod down into the switch. hasn't had high beams since.

I know a hell of a lot better now.

but whats TGO?

Edit: i've moved the search out to 500 miles, debated an automatic with t-tops, changed my mind and am dead set on a 305 manual. Thing is, i have new carpet, a bunch of new interior parts, a 400 jvc head unit, a temp, compass rear view, the rare vinyl cargo cover and the rare trunk cover thing. "it makes the trunk flat by covering the (pit) needs reinforcing though. steel plate bolted to the plastic or some such"

ok, firebird not too far from here. seems in good condition. it says "1984 v6 5speed" lady said she replaced the clutch a while back. im sure its a 5speed.

In my research, the 1984's had less ponies and torque than the 1987's V6 but they offered an H.O. v6 for the 1984, raised the ponies by 20? and moved the torque up a bit in the rpm range.

Is this car worth looking at if it has this engine in it? I would like to get -some- performance out of it. Need enough to get the 1 wheel to break loose "open differential" hahaha

My 2.8 V6 5 speed wasn't a speed demon, but it was peppy for the size of the car and everything, unlike the autos I'd ridden in. I could bark 3rd gear any time I wanted.

nice. I know how good my 87' was, not sure if that little bit of torque makes a difference though. Anyway, i'm going to to check it out, I wrote the VIN wrong so wasn't able to check it up. I got a few books and know just about every option and such, including the stuff that the vin means, for each year. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Posted By: fallenleader1 On: 04-20-2008 @ 19:09:27     Reply | Top | Edit
bought it. no muffler, sounds nasty "in a good way" anyway its pretty ok, got a good price, vin clears out, apparently the odo's only go up to 99,999 + whatever tenths Its rolled over to 34,000+/- hahahaha.
