just bought governor-lock style posi unit and 4.30 gears off ebay for my 88 formula 400 bottom end with tbi top end cant wait to get them and install! goodbye 2.73 single wheel!

I dont think a 400 crank will fit in your 305...

All that ignored, the TBI unit wont be big enough to feed it as it can barely handle the 305

The 4.30 gear ratio is going to KILL your gas mileage and top end power

Are you sure any of those mods are a good idea?

no, the whole bottom end of the motor is a 1974 chevy 400, just the heads and intake and throttle body are off of the original 305, runs fine now, but you can tell that the gears suck, dead out of the hole, dont really care about gas mileage, at most, it is a weekend car, really love drag racing.

i do plan on installing bigger injectors and/or bigger throttle body, and posibbly in future if they are not enough, i will dump the computer and go carburetor

as far as gas mileage, i drive a 3/4 ton silverado hd every day to work!

What's the word I'm looking for? Oh yeah, detonation.

And I think that you'll need to machine the heads for steam holes. I could easily be wrong though.

You do realise that the 305 TBI swirlports are the WORST heads made by GM?

And you put them on a 400 SBC?

And THEN you mounted the factory 305 TBI unit ontop of it all?

Ill bet your stock old 305 was stronger than this... thing

What a mismatch from hell

How to fix it:

Get better heads
Stockers from the 400 atleast, 350TPI heads would be cheap too, maybe vortecs

Get better intake
Any 4bbl intake will fit and can be matched to any of the above heads
Get the TBI adapter plate and you're all set

Get better TBI unit
For a performance build, go with a holley or Stock TBI off a 454

Get a better engine management system
EBL (cheap stock retrofit), Holley, DFI, etc
Anything is better than stock

Get a real cam
On your own here

Once you get the motor up to specs you can worry about gear selection
Or you can be one of those guys who buys 5 different gear sets because hes always changing stuff and the old set doesnt work well with the new combo again

You should get at least a cheap set of 882 or 993 heads. Get a Victor Jr. intake and Holley and your set. Be sure to use a .015" head gasket if you want at least an acceptable CR with the 400 heads. Better yet if you can get them milled. These heads are cheap, and so is the intake/carb setup. Good luck. New flat-tappet cams are dirt cheap. You won't believe the increase in horsepower.

Match the head chambers to the stock CR of the engine before you start worrying about very minor CR changes from special thickness head gaskets

New flat-tappet cams are dirt cheap

Thats because they are old technology

There is a very good reason 99% of all new internal cams are rollers

ok thanks but the car is already running anytime i want it to, just run it on the weekends, and it was a hell of an improvement over the 305 bottom end

I like how he mentions "i do plan on installing bigger injectors and/or bigger throttle body, and posibbly in future if they are not enough, i will dump the computer and go carburetor". I thought that the TBI was the injector and TB in one, or was i mistaken? Why ruin a perfectly good SBC 400 with a TBI intake, I mean atleast keep it close to what GM used go 4 barrel.

They have larger TB's and injectors for TBI units just like port injected units like your TPI
