GTA headlight issues

Ok all, as in my last post I am back in the F-body game and already have an issue. When I turn just the parking lights on the headlights flip up but do not illuminate. When I then continue to press the secondary top part of the headlights then the headlights light up.The foglight switch also seems to be not getting any power. I checked the foglights themselves and the are getting no power and on the foglight switch for the 1991 model there is a yellow indicator light that is supposed to turn on upon turning the foglights on but even that isnt lighting up. I do not believe there are any relays, can both issues be a bad headlight switch? Does the headlight switch itself actually complete a circut to the foglights?

Note that I have already tried switching the relay on the firewall as well and still have the same issue.

Lights flipping up when the parking lights only are engaged normally means a bad headlight switch on the dash
The little green light in the foglight switch will burnout after 17 years
First, check that both of the lights are not burnt out. These things have a VERY short lifespan especially if you use them often like I do. Brand new they live 3-6 months
Test if its getting power via multimeter

Ok today I changed the headlight switch on the dash and also the relay on the firewall. The foglights were a fuse which was overlooked somehow. So when first installing the new relay one the firewall the headlights worked properly for two attempts and then went right back to acting up again. I then changed the relay back to the old and it had the same issue again. After this I changed the switch on the dash and the relay again and once again still the same issue.

New GM headlight switch and relay on the firewall. Same issue. Does anybody know a website where I can find a headlight wiring diagram to try and find the potential short?

Arch, talked to a few guys over at ThirdGen.org who had the same issue. They told me that I need to rebuild my headlight motor(s) if one or both are acting up and my passenger side spins and spins for about ten seconds before finally lifting up and has the same issue when going down. I am going to call Hawks on Monday and order the rebuild kit and maybe get them finished within two weeks. I will keep you posted.

You left that lil detail out
Then yes you need a rebuild on both headlight motors

Yeap, my headlights act just like that. I'll rebuild them or replace them. Thanks a lot for the input. --

Hi All!
I have an '87 GTA, but have not had that problem before with my headlights... I have an issue with my computer contol center telling me that there is an issue with my "F LAMPS" which i finally figured out were my FRONT lamps... I have replaced both headlight motors, checked all bulbs, everything looks fine, but i keep getting this annoying little message on my display.
Pocket, if you're reading this, you might remember this from a previous post a while ago from me...
Anyone know how to clear out this error messaage?
I can hold down the SYS CHECK button for 3 seconds and that clears the message, but after I shut off the car and start it back up, my message appears AGAIN...

I am new to this site and to trans ams. I just bought an 87 and love it. I have the same headlight issues. Where can I find this rebuild kit? The driver's side motor works but the gear is stripped. The passenger side motor does nothing. Is this common as well?
Thanks!

After I put in my headlight motors, the passenger side was doing the little dance of opening 1/2 way then stalling for a bit then finally opening all the way. I know there is a kit available, but if you got the '87, yours should be just like mine... I ended up taking both headlight motors back out, removing the 3 screws on the side that hold the gear and shaft in place, and found the gear was still in excellent shape, but the cavity was full of white plastic powder...
check out this link that shows how to fix them CHEAP!! It works, because I did just what this guy suggested.

I hope I'm not breaking any rules of this site by posting this link...

Thank you so much. I saw these "pucks" on ebay for about 12 bucks and couldn't figure out how that would work to solve my problem if no gears were included. Good to know I can now spend 12 cents instead of 12 bucks......or $400! I will try this fix soon. Thanks for the link and the info.

I am about to redo the interior of my 1987 trans am. How do I determine the color of my interior? I can't find the cowl tag that usually has info like paint and interior color codes. It is on the firewall or elsewhere? There is sticker that has ben removed inside the driver's door.
