Ok Sorry for "paging" but there is no PM feature and I don't know your email, but I believe you know my knocking situation as I've complained about it so many times before... Anyone can help me out though. I haven't worked on my car pretty much all winter, and I just started on it again today. I detached the torque converter from the flywheel, and my "knocking" noise seems to be magically gone, other than a bad sounding rattle when I first started it up which isn't new. Other than the engine running like crap because there is no TC to keep the inertia of it going, I can't hear that knock anymore. After a long time searching the bottom end, I found nothing. So should this lead me to believe that it is a noise coming from the flexplate? I originally had this idea but everyone seemed to tell me no. I heard it can sound similar to an engine knock... I still can't see any cracks visually or anything, but I can't see much of anything very good regardless. Anywho, if you have any idea's, they'd be much appreciated. I don't know if it should make that violent rattle when you start it up w/o the TC or not. Is that just from flexing, or is it cause it's probably cracked? Like I say, it did that rattle on startup before, but nowhere near as violent. --

Believe it, or not I had a customer who thought
he had a bad rod/spun bearing due to a knocing sound.
It turned out to be loose bolts on the torque
converter and it was rattling against the flywheel.
This seems like a possibilty for you as the noise
stopped when you removed the torque conveter. -- Welcome to the Internet, where everyone's a mechanic and has a 10 second car.

My 92 had that problem, its common in 3rd gens
Mine was subtle at certain RPMs then became pronounced at startup
Put the TC back on tightly and see if the sound goes away. If it does not you may have to go deeper

funky noises at startup lead to me to beleive you either need to shim your starter, or your flywheel is indeed cracked/warped --

The TC was on hella tight, lol, so I don't think that was the problem. --

Possible cracked flexplate, broken TC, or severe internal trans problem, sorry buddy -- "If you have complete control over the damned thing, you're not going fast enough." - Carrol Smith

Could there be a possibility of the holes on the TC and the holes on the flexplate being lined up with each other wrong? Like if it was meant to be balanced, and bolted up a certain way? Maybe it got rotated... --

on my 91 bird i have similar issues, but its more of a tick than a knock. kinda sounds like someones tapping on a heat sheild with a hammer, and it increases with RPMs, but it only does it while in gear. we may have the same issue --

The TC will only bolt up to one set of holes on the flex
The only reason you would have more than one set is for a dual pattern flex and even then, it will only reach one set
The flex is balanced on its own, any rotation of the TC wont affect it
Youre on your own with a heat shield rattle

i had that problem on my lt1 once and it was the TC bolts, but u said yours were tight, but were they really tight? or just rusted or maybe a bad thread made it seem tight? IDK.. but you might have a cracked flywheel around the bolt holes and that would still let the bolt move around but still be tight check the holes really good on your flexplate.. -- 1994 Camaro Z28 A4, Soon:
