I'M NOT BUILDING A RACE CAR

Posted By: LeadFootedRacer On: 01-02-2008 @ 19:40:55         Reply | Edit
but after beating the shit out my car on turkey day (hence sig) i'm getting this real faint tick out of my top end. now i have a set of small chamber heads for a 305 i can send out and have cleaned up and toss on the car. a while back i started building a 383 and sold it to my dad. now i can buy it back from him, but i'm thinkin that the money i put into a 383, i can put into my 305 and be just as happy. i'm not looking for 400 horse. i figure some head work, cam, possible re-ring bottom end with bearings, alot intake work, a cai, roller rockers, and the t-5 swap. that'd give me some seat-of-the-pants dyno results over the stock 305 with headers. i'm also planning on going from a 2.73 gear to a 3.42 or 3.73 gear. again, putting out more result. if i pull the bottom end apart, maybe i'll look for a set of domed pistons. just for the little bit of extra compression.

what do you guys think? spend 3k on a 305 or closer to 5 or 6k on a 383?

oh, my other question is how do i identify vortec style heads? the motor in my car supposedly isnt the stock one. the body has 182k miles on it, so i doubt that motor is anywhere near the stock one the way the rest of the car has been beaten. they have centerbolt valve covers, but is the stock TPI unit vortec?

my 60cc chamber heads are off my 79 caprice wagon, so that was non vortec.

How to ID the heads

No TPI was ever vortec
You can buy aftermarket bases to fit vortec heads but you will identify those easily

ah, gotcha. so now that i know the TPI will fit my other heads, i'm on a hunt for a 305 short block to freshen up. everywhere i look, all i can find is 64cc and up chamber heads. from being raised by an "old school" hotrodder, smaller chambers are teh way to make cheaper power. i have a set of 60cc heads lyin around. so i'll get those out to a shop immediatly.

do they make domed 305 pistons? i probably shoudlnt run them due to valve clearance. how do i check that before i buy them?

Smaller chambers boosts compression
Not really a power boost, but whatever

Yes they make domed 305 pistons

Most decent piston companys will make a forged domed piston for your lawn mower if you give them the specs

i though more compression = more power

= more detonation in an already detonation prone motor.

yeah it does make more power but you'd be better off making that power through heads and a cam

i already intend on a cam and having my 60cc heads redone anyway. so i'd be doing heads and cam anyway. so i'd be making the heads/cam horsepower you speak of while raising the compression ratio at the same time.

Have fun with that tune

TPI chips are a major PITA

That was my problem

Im building a 411 harness now

The LSx market is so big why not use it on some ancient relics like 3rd gens

What happened to that motor you were gonna put in your poop brown camero?

411 = 00-01 LS1 PCM

Read the thread on TGO about OBDII in the TPI forum
Should answer any questions about why you would want this over any 3rd gen ECM

Whoever said it was an easy swap is lying thru his teeth

I am sure you could pick up a LSx motor for what you would have into the 305

and the work it takes to put it in is rediculous compared to a simple swap.
