headlight motor wiring problem (maybe)

Posted By: lionstring On: 12-31-2007 @ 14:09:44         Reply | Edit
Hi All!
I own an '87 GTA with the digital dash - pretty cool! It shows any problems with the car, and for the longest time I have had my display telling me there is something wrong with my F LAMPS (i finally figured out this means Front Lamps)
OK, so I checked all the lamps, and everything works. Lights go on when I turn them on, lights go off when I turn them off, headlights go up, headlights go down... long story short, I can't find the problem so I can fix this and clear out the message...
BUT... I did replace the headlight motors earlier this year with ones from an '86 T/A... these motors have 3 wires coming out and mine only had 2 wires... I was able to hook it all up so it all works, but I think I'm missing something because of that annoying message on my display...
Has anyone changed out their motors with older ones??
Any help with wiring them up would be appreciated!!
Thanks!

i changed my motors a few times, and they are very picky with working correctly. mine go up when i turn on the parking lights. it had happened b4, and i changed the PS motor and it stopped, then started again a year later. its weird, but idk why it happens. flip up headlights are just a pain in the butt

How did you fit a 3 wire setup in your two wire car?

Thanks!
In answer to "How did you fit a 3 wire setup in your 2 wire car":
physically, everything fit ok
the wiring was done like so:
The Car: Green and Grey
The Motor: Blue, Green w/white stripe, and Grey w/black stripe
(on the drivers side):
Connect Blue and Grey w/black stripe from motor to Green in car
Connect Green w/white stripe from motor to Grey in car.
Like I said, all works OK, except that I get that annoying little message on my display. I know if I push and hold the Sys Check button for 3 seconds, it clears out the message, but the undelying problem is still there because the next time I turn on the car, there's that message.
This is for my '87 GTA, and looking at my Haynes manual under the Headlamp Door Circuit schematic, this will work for '87 - '89 only.

Im flabbergasted that the old style motors would even work with the new style relay and lacking their own individual relays

As to your problem, replacing the motors with a pair from a two wire style will remedy the light
Birds, Fieros, Corvettes all used the same motors so JY pickings wont be too hard
