Timing.

I have a timing issue. It will turn but it hasn't been producing spark since i got a new cap. I need to know when top dead center. Shouldn't the Distributor cap rotor be pointing at the number one cylinder? I know that may seem stupid question but, never had this big of an issue on timing. It is a 350 bored over to a 383 with a Holley Intake and an 800 CFM Edelbrock carb. It had spit fuel up the carb and it did start a fire once or twice. So i know there was spark then. But now there is NO spark at all. I have the #1 spark plug out to check. I got the firing order right. Just kinda lost from that point on. -- 91 Firebird 3.1L-Turning into Twin Turbo

all you did was change the cap?
even though your firing order is "right" doesnt necessarily mean its correct. a SBC will run as long as the firing order is "right" with about 900* of timing. if you put your #1 wire where the #7 wire should be, and ran the wires in the "right" order, your car would run but timing it would be hell.
just double check that your distributer aslo isnt 180* off. sometimes that happens. --

I usually have the #1 plug out and put my finger over the hole and turn the motor until you feel pressure to tell you you're comming up to TDC on #1. Check with my diagrams below first to make sure you have wires going where they need to go.
Distribtor cap
Front of car ===1=8=== =2= == =4= =7= == =3= ===5=6===
Plugs
Front of car 1= = =2 3= = =4 5= = =6 7= = =8
Then if that's good, instead of pointing the rotor at cylinder 1 when on TDC have it already past it roughly 3/8". This will have the rotor toward the passenger side, and the #1 spot on the cap toward the driver side. Basically I'm saying advance the timing a bit before starting it. Mine actually won't run without maybe 10 degrees advance at the least because the cam is so big, and bleeds off compression. And if it still doesn't start, try letting more fuel in with the idle mixture screws. That should be about it, otherwise you're not getting spark and/or fuel correctly or at all. -- 1982 Z28, 383, D-1SC intercooled @ 10psi, trick flow heads, solid roller cam, 3.73's, stall 9.97@137, 1.48 60', 633rwhp@7400, 472rwtq@6800 AIM:CHATV400

I changed the entire distributor. The old one i bought for 20 bucks so i figured it was that. So i bought an MSD Cap. But i thought i had the timing right but i guess it is 180* off. I have to wait untill this weekend to try that because it is sitting about 160 miles north of here. If you guys got anything else that might help me here. It will all be appriciated -- 91 Firebird 3.1L-Turning into Twin Turbo
