3rd Gen Aftermarket Suspension

Posted By: yellowirocz On: 01-04-2008 @ 00:17:25         Reply | Edit
I'm currently going through the entire suspension of my 87 iroc and am looking for the proper pieces to put it on the way to make it a mean, tight handling street machine. While i do like to run it hard against some ovals occassionally, i dont forsee this car spending too much time at the track so i dont want anything too stiff.
My game plan was for upper and lower control arms, panhard bar, eibach 1.5" drop springs, front strut tower brace, sway bars, and sub frame connectors.
Would like opinions on brands (whose good and whose not) and if people think i might be going overboard with some of the upgrades. Thanks

I just installed the Top Down Solutions Wonder Bar and I liked the new feel in the steering. It really tightened things up for me. Next is their subframe connectors that I just received, but haven't installed yet.

may i ask why subframe connectors are the best thing?
just wondering, ive never even driven a car with them

Posted By: roubenbird On: 06-28-2007 @ 13:42:44     Reply | Top | Edit
well your car has basically two sub frames. meaning a little part of a frame in the front and a little part of a frame in the back. our cars are also called unibodies

sub-frame connnectors do just that, they are metal stock that are welded to each subframe therefore connecting the two together = stiffening the car=making the car whole.

drive over some unecen railroad tracks that are not totally perpendicular to the road. Look at the placewhere your Ttops meet the back sail panel (assuming your car has ttops) Or just notice the torsional twist of teh car in general.

Now imagine that this all gone, your car is stiffer, there are no more squeaks and rattles. it turns better, it doesnt feel like its gonna twist apart when it goes over large uneven patches in the road.

you can have all this and more with the addition of subframe connectors on your car...

WOW, Brad, you didn't have these on your car already?!?!?!?!!?!?

Your gonna love them!

I have a torque arm from Spohn and I am very happy with it.

Just so you know, the third gens only have lower control arms up front.

Yeah Ben...I'm kind of slow on the subframe thing. I just got a welder so I can weld them in. I just need to get some welding practice and I'll get this neglected part of the build done. I should have done it LONG ago..but when you get old, you get lazy!

I also noticed more stiffness with replacement lower control arms and an Edelbrock panhard rod in the rear, so you might want to look into those as well.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I just put in the subframe connectors by Top Down Solutions. They are made for them by Alston Racing. WOW! What a difference they make! Ben, you were right! For now they are just bolted in as I had a few challenges on the installation and it took longer than I had planned to get them in.

They are worth every penny! The car rides totally different than before. Much firmer and less wander on the road. The acid test came when I drove home with them on a short stretch of HORRIBLE road on Rt 23 here in Ohio. There is abotu a half mile of wavy pavement that used to throw the car all over the place. You would have had to experienced it to believe it. Well, I hit the same stretch with the bolted in connectors and it tracked straight and true without hardly a hint of the severe angle changes in the pavement. I was shocked! I am still messing with my welder trying to learn it a bit more before welding them in, but I highly recommend the sub frame connectors as a best bang for the buck. It should have been the first thing I did to the car!

87 formula, I put the bolt in SFC from jegs easy job, maybe weld in later.,also the short torque arm from same,as the gear vendors unit requires you to remove trans tail.I went with Eibach sport line springs and cut a half coil out of them, figuered id rather go to low than to high, they must have built a safety margin into them as my car sits the way I wanted it to,but each car is diffrent!

I have the 1.5 lowering springs in my 85 Firebird...its a bumpy ride! I would look into something a little less stiff...the car hits the bumps in the road so hard that I am thinking about putting the stock springs back in....other that that I also have the whole hotchiks suspension in the rear along with suspension technique sway bars and KYB gas struts. Anyone have suggestions for me? Anyone want to buy some nice Eibach springs?

installing the Alston subframe connectors on an 88 RS convertible, right one was a bear with removing the cat, started to sleeve the subframe stubs before using bolting but passed on all of that, horizontal bolts will only hold for a short time, till the stubs compress. Then took the interior out, made 4 plates(1/8" plate) to follow the contour of the floor, these are directly above the connector ends and migged them to the floor, drilled 2 holes per plate and bolted vertically w/grade 8 bolts. Now going to weld the 4 ends to the stubs. The Alston pieces followed the stub struture and floor contours perfectl, no heating or bending, only shame was grinding off the shiny powder coat.
Took some pics of the installation because it will mostly be covered up. Hope it all works along with an Edelbrock shock tower connector and front frame connector.
Have a good one Doug

I know right. Like I said in another post, threads should be locked after 30 days. You can see them but not add to them and bring them back from the dead.
