I have a 600cfm carborator from edlebrock on my 84' firebird with a 305. because i live in utah it said for me to change the "jets" in the carb due to high altitude. i didn't have the money to get them at the time, and i'm wondering if that is going to restrict the car?
On another note, i was told that i would have to change the distributor due to the quadra toilet running electronicly in sync with the distributor. Supposedly that is what is causing my rmps not to drop, unless i goose it for like a half second... if that makes since [ Edited on 06/21/2007 @ 17:13:05 ]

Ok, I've done this on my 1984 Bird, so I guess I'm familiar with it. The Edelbrock 600 CFM is fine for this engine and will work well if you ever swap to a 350 as I have.
If you are at higher altitude, yes, the carb will have to be leaned out some to match the less dense air. You can try it as is as if it is the 1406 model, it's jetted lean for fuel economy anyway. If it's the 1405 carb, it will likely need to be leaned down some. You will have to experiement and watch your spark plugs to tell if it's too rich. If it is, the plugs will tend to foul and the car won't run as good as it could, just need to match it to your altitude in your case.
Ok, on the electronically controlled distributor. Yes, if you are getting rid of the stock quadrajet that has all the computer hookups and going to the Edelbrock you will need to get a regular HEI. Without the feedback carb in place to mate with the computer (it gives throttle position info as well as control to the carb's fuel enrichment solenoids, etc.), the electronic spark advance system will not function and you will have lousy timing and lousy running. Get a regular HEI as I did and the problem will be solved. Enjoy the little red check engine light and ignore it as now the computer is out of the picture. The computer system is more precisely controlled, but in my case, the previous owner had done a butcher job on this system and it wasn't worth trying to fix. It runs well and I prefer to have control over the system in the "old school" tradition that I grew up with. Enjoy!

a standard HEI distributor with a vaccum advance would be ideal in your situation. i dont like posting after brad, he seems to always have the answers. --

Boy leadfoot...have I got you fooled! Thanks for the kind words, but there are lots of folks much smarter than myself on here. You are right, it would be best to run an HEI with vacuum advance. -- Brad

I also live in utah and I recently installed the Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake manifold and 600cfm carburetor. I had to buy the metering rods and jets in order to pass emissions. So I would say you would need to replace them.
I was tired of the factory carb not performing and running rich. SO I spent $2000 on Intake and MSD Ignition just so I could pass emissions. Well, for the performance mostly, but the emissions as well.
