fuel mileage observed

Posted By: 84SEBird On: 12-27-2007 @ 22:35:47         Reply | Edit
Ok, my Bird is not specifically a mileage experiment, but with the high gas prices, I'm checking into how much fuel I'm using and was wondering what you guys are getting for mileage.

I have a 350 with Edelbrock 600 CFM carb and a 700R4 overdrive. I have been averaging in the 18-19.5 MPG range with a mix of some city and some country road/highway driving. Sometimes I hit as low as 17 MPG and sometimes just over 20.

I was wondering if you folks with 350's are getting similar results or if I'm way off the mark. Anyone care to share their MPG numbers?
Thanks!
Brad

when i had my lo3 firebirds i was getting around that mileage, and with 45 extra cubi inches, it seems like your not doing bad at all. how rich is your carb jetted?

The Edelbrock carb I have is the #1406, and it comes jetted VERY lean from the factory. It is set up for mileage. Well, I've had to jet it up two steps as it was running way too lean. The plugs were so clean it was rediculous. I now have a small amount of tan deposits on the insulator as I should have. I know it sounds weird, but just jetting this thing up a couple notches made it act like a whole new engine... found a bunch of extra power out of it.

I used to hit the 17-18 MPG level quite a bit, but I got rid of the flex fan and went with an electric and switched to Royal Purple motor oil and also put the purple stuff in the rear end. It seems these two things helped a little. I think I may try experimenting with the timing a bit and see if it changes anything. I'm running about 10 degrees at idle right now and I think I can get away with 12 since there's no sign of ping/preignition so far.

Thanks for the observations. My dream is to consisitently get 20-25 MPG out of this thing, but I may be dreaming with a 350. They tend to be thirsty! Got to give the credit to the 305, fuel injected cars and the newer LS series of engines for better economy!

20 to 25 is realistic but going to be a challenge with the A4, whats your rear gearing and tire size?

Posted By: 84SEBird On: 06-17-2007 @ 20:47:55     Reply | Top | Edit
Rear gear is a 3.23 which I think is a good compromise between efficiency and acceleration. The tires are 235/60/15. When I bought the car, it had 215/60/15 on them from the previous owner. That was a good inch too small in diameter and putting these new ones on got it back to the original tire diameter, just a bit wider for handling. I guess I need to be fairly happy where I am now as the last 350 I owned a long time ago only got 13-14 MPG. At least I'm better than that! I guess I was wondering if the level I'm at now is realistic for this size of engine and equipment or if I was way under what these cars usually get with a 350 in them.
Thanks for the replies!

My 91 RS use to get to get 28hwy and 20city w/ the ac running. Worst it ever did was 16, and that was a whole tank of nothing but full throttle.

in my 87 GTA I am pulling 26-29 on the highway but in town it goes to like 14-15mpg. It has the TPI 350 with a Comp extreme energy cam. Been bored 30 over. I also installed a JET stage 2 chip and a home made cold air intake.I'll post some pictures as soon as i get a digital camera.
