ok so i'm still working on the 350, but this topic concerns the old 305.
background: few months back i was heading about 3 miles down the road to where my dad lives and i get almost there, maybe a block away from his house, and the car suddenly dies. well, the car was low, by low i mean empty, on oil, but the store is in the same town as he lives in. so i figured while i was down visiting him i would swing by and pick up the oil i needed and blah blah blah. back to the main story, i was just there and the car dies and won't start or won't even crank/turn over. nothing at all there. well after a little tinkering around came to the conclusion that the motor was locked up because couldn't even turn it over by hand, which is understandable considering the oil being low. so we get a trailer from a buddy and haul it back to his house, which is about 3 miles from my house in the other direction. it sat there for about 2 1/2 months and we finally got around to messing with it some more. well he got his tractor out, , and we push the car down his driveway and i pop the clutch and the car fired up. the damn thing smoked like a train, but it ran good. i drove it up the road a couple blocks and back. well i happened to notice a vacuum line off the top of the engine was off and the engine was making a horrible noise. well we plugged that and i drove it back to my house, 3 miles from his, and when i pulled up there was a horrible knocking.
so now we jump to the present. after sitting for 2 weeks after bringing it home i checked the oil and it was completely full. new realizations and 2 new problems later. i have metal "shavings," more like dust, in the oil and the car is running extremely rich. the car has a knocking type sound after i raise the rpms and drop the throttle and it sounds like the car trying to climb a hill in too high of a gear, just a bogging kind of sound mixed with a knock kind of sound. i'm sure some of you know the noise i'm talking about. i do have a lifter rod pinging, but i'm not too worried about that too much. now on with the main question...
what would cause the metal dust in the oil?
i'm sure the engine running rich isn't a very big problem and neither is the rod pinging, but the dust in the oil just raises some flags with me.
anybody have any ideas? --

Metal in the oil means youve had some metal to metal contact from poor lubrication or excessive use (worn out)
Metal in the oil is a pretty good sign that engine is done and needs a rebuild before it becomes un-fixable
A rod knock is not some minor problem you can sit on until a good time rolls around
Id go thru that engine with as much detail as you can to determine exactly whats wrong
The electronics can be sorted later, you have a mechanical problem. Id start by pulling the intake and the oilpan and looking for obvious problems, then check your lifters, drop your rod caps to inspect the bearings, and check your oilpump -- "If you have complete control over the damned thing, you're not going fast enough." - Carrol Smith
