i was raised a chevy boy. about 5 years ago i bought an 84 firebird (v6 5spd) for my first car. i paid $150 and just planned on fixing up the interior and body. thing ran mint. never finished it. got my license and drove a million different cars. still have the car though. motor is out and what not. car is completely gutted and i started the tubbing process. i have the 4-link back half and the wheels and tires for it, but they arent installed. i have recently purchased an 87 trans am to replace my subaru for summer driving and some fun. i've looked into finishing the pro-street firebird project and realized its ugly. i dont like the grilles in the bumper and crap. dad doesnt want me to ditch the shell but thats all it is. what do you guys think? this is a list of the projects plans, regardless of the shell.

-either sbc or bbc with large blower and 2 carbs
-4 link and 9" ford rear end (4:56 gears)
-complete custom interior with a few subs and stuff
-major roll cage
-custom paint
-air ride suspension, not to drag frame, just the stance
-wheelie bars
-the goal is to pull a wheelie with a complete chromed out mirror finish, show car. the type you put a mirror under. help me out... i need ideas

theres a link to my cardomain that i havent touched in 2 1/2 years.

If you dont like the look of the 84 you can give it a facelift with a newer style nose/rear

Ground effects or not suiting your taste

Sooooo what are you aiming for? Show car or dragcar?

major roll cage...
Think you mean a tube chassis with the old firebird skin

You dont need too awful much to lift the front wheels, its all suspension setup and weight distribution

well my goal is to take it to the track and lift the front wheels once. after that i want to drive it to shows and put mirrors under it.

i thought about swapping out the nose and such, but what would i have to do to mount the rocker gfx? can i make brackets?

i'm not going with a tube chassis, but more like a 12 point cage. really stiffin that puppy up.

everyone told me to run a mustang II or Nova front subframe, i'm going to keep the firebird one in there and just modify that.

So you want one good run before you make a show car

Blown BBC cheap slap it together Ebay parts
Should be an easy 1000hp there $6-7k

Convert a 9" ford or complete your backhalf and get some slicks (used is fine since your not gonna put many runs on em)

A cage will stiffen the chassis but then all the original frame will jsut add a crapload of dead weight

Make your run and then sell the BBC for a mild SBC then mount a blower on it with alot of underdrive and polish/chrome everything. Showcars dont need gobs of muscle, jsut look like they're bursting at the seams with it

Id use either a T350 or a powerglide for your drag run and swap to maybe a T-56 for your showcar

They told you to use the mustang/nova front because its super simple and lightweight, perfect for drag and lookin good in a custom ride

Ground effects wont be hard to swap, yes they use brackets, 85-90 have an outer bolt on bracket with a welded on inner bracket. Sheet metal will suffice for the inner bracket once you get it set
91-92 have one big welded on bracket, again sheet metal will be fine

Kinda shootin yourself in the foot to make a monster and jsut keep it tame the rest of its life

If you ever get your drag run I think youll stick with the go fast part over the look good. Its addictive

see, thats the problem. i dont want to build the car twice. bad enough as it is, i've been screwing with it off and on for 4-5 years already. i am planning on all the go fast parts with all the pretty perks. all stainless lines, pretty painted parts, pinstriped framerails, complete aluminum and fiberglass interior with subwoofers and speakers everywhere, nitrous, huge blower, ya know... everyones fantasy. lol

Make it run like you need it to then worry about the pretties

And I know the feelin when you plan ahead so much only to have to change something alot of times and it ends up completely different than you wanted

well once i get the trans am road ready and actually on the road, all money will be spent on the project. i have been budgeting my money fairly well i think. i started a new job so my dad loaned me 2g to buy a daily driver, and i agreed to pay $100 a week untill it was paid. i got it down to $600, and then bought the trans am and such and worked a few deals so now its donw to $1430 is what i owe on the 2 cars so far. as i buy things for the trans am to make it raod worthy, it'll go on my tab. but once its all paid off thats $400 a month AT LEAST to put into the project. i've also been putting in alot of overtime lately. things should start to pull together in the next few months
