Glass T-Tops

Posted By: ScreaminEagle91 On: 01-03-2008 @ 12:30:29         Reply | Edit
well during my junkyard search the other day i came across a beautiful set of glass t tops on a 91 bird. i also have a 91, but it came with lexan. i bought the glass ones, and i noticed there were differences in the weatherstripping on the cars and the t tops. well it rained last nite and guess what? leaked like a siv! any help in stopping these leaks would be appreciated. i dont care how dumb the idea is, i welcome them all, cause they look great, but i cant take the leaks!

Take the A pillar and sail panel trim off and adjust the reciever mounts lower so the t-tops pull down and seal when they latch

You may have to re-adjust the door windows

Use your waterhose to test your seals

Even cheaper yet is diagnosing if you actually need the new seals. Sometimes you can soften the old ones up or jsut adjust your parts to fit better

Old school trick:

If your weatherstripping isn't sealing well anymore due to drying up, cracking, and just age/use....you can put some petrollium jelly (vasoline) on the rubber to bring it back to life for a better seal.

Wait for a nice sunny day and remove the t-tops.
Clean the weatherstripping to remove any film or dirt.
Librally spread some of the vasoline on all the surfaces that the t-tops touch and where the t-top seal and door seal meet. (also apply to t-tops where the window meets them)
Let the vasoline soak into the rubber for atleast 3-4 hours in the sun.
Get an old rag and whipe the excess vasoline off and walla...Your seals are as close to new as you're gonna get without replacing them.

I had to do this about every year and a half with my 91 RS, and it worked like a charm every time.

Fun fact: The petrollium jelly causes the seals to swell and retain the oily moisture thus causeing the glass t-tops to stick to it better and make a water tight seal.
