Brake issues! Please help!

Posted By: mrcrazyhimself On: 01-04-2008 @ 22:19:29         Reply | Edit
Just today, i stopped at a drive thru window and accidently put alot of pressure on the brakes. So when the pedal came back up, it came back up slow and the red brake light came on and is still on. No leaks are coming from the bottom of the car. So the brakes were perfectly fine be4 that happened and now, the brakes feel soft til about halfway then the car stops fine. any idea on what could be wrong?

Well, there could be a leak somewhere that is not noticable such as the rear brake cylinders can leak a bit before it is real obvious. I'd pull the rear drums and the inspect the fronts. It sounds like air in the lines, but for air to get in there when it's been working fine would mean some kind of leak or opening in the system to allow the air in there. Have you checked your master cylinder to see if you are loosing fluid? I'd also check the condition of the rubber lines to the front and rear. It could be that a line is old and ballooning/expanding out when you hit the brakes and causing the soft pedal. I wouldn't wait long to check it.

I too have something similar as my brakes (all new components and bled the daylights out of them) and it's still not overly firm, but stops well. Keep us posted on what you find.
Good luck!
Brad
PS- could be a bad master cylinder--- actually it's likely as it could be the seals are starting to go and the hard usage just pushed it over the edge.

After you check for leaks, how old are your rubber lines and calipers

replace rubber brake lines. They are more than likely collapsed

before you do all that check you master cylinder! Is their any fluid in it IMPORTANT, if not than you have an external leak, if it is full, replace your mastercylinder... internal leak!

take off the master cylinder.....it could be your booster too......easy fix under $100. just do it before you get into an accident.
