Turbo 454?

Posted By: machme72 On: 01-04-2008 @ 03:31:36         Reply | Edit
I know you can swap a 454 into the 3rd gen t/a without extreme difficulty, assuming you are able to resolve the fuel/heat issue. Now I know it is a snug fit but would it be possible to add a single turbo to the engine without modding the hood of the car. I understand that fuel injection and such would be a must, but would there be enough room for the plumbing of the turbo(s). If it has been done before a link to the thread or whatever would be usefull, unfortunatly i have not found a whole lot on a 454 swap. i'm looking at a fuel injected 454 paired up to a stand alone fuel system, then a turbo on the back. thank you for you time

Not to be debbie downer but, if your going to do that much to a car, (you'll have to mod/get a new tranny, rear, frame), what is the difficulty in getting a new hood?

You could still use a carb. with that, but I don't see any way of getting around a new/modding the hood. I have a 4" cowl hood and am using just bout all of it. I don't have a bbc though, but as far as the hoods concerned it probably is the same or worse.

It isn't so much that i would mind the work/$/ etc of getting the hood, but i would like to maintain the stock look with the 454, i've read in several diffrent places that the 454 can be swapped without changinge the hood(assuming the low rise is used) The turbo, not a supercharger(i know its commonplace to mix the two up) itself would end up somewhere behind the engine(where the two collectors join or i'd have to twin turbo if room there was insuffecent). I also know that turbos have a lot of plumbing that needs to be resolved and some of the carb clearance issues will be resolved by going with FI . the allure is that the engine has more than enough torque in the low end for me, its just bringing those hp ratings up. I also understand that everyone seems to go with superchargers, and i would really like to try a turbo(oil cooled) out. pics of the 454 installed would give me a better idea as well.thanks again for the quick responses.

with custom manifolds the turbo could can be housed in the front. its the better way to do it. there would be alot of custom fab work to the core support but i bet it could be done. that sounds like one N A S T Y combination

its actually possible to mount them in the Back. there is an Episode of TWO GUYS Garage where they add twin Turbos to a Corvette in the back. They explain what is actually needed to get Boost out of a Turbo Mounted that Far away from the Manafolds.

Check.. www.twoguysgarage.com and find the episode. then figure out what they installed and call that Manufacture.

Just a Suggestion
