Drivetrain Question

Posted By: smokeyman66 On: 03-21-2008 @ 09:30:26         Reply | Edit
Hello, new to your forum and had a question. The knowledge here seems endless so I thought I would ask the experts. I am in the process of doing a "resto-mod" of a '67 Bird. I built the 400 up to 478hp and am having problems deciding what to put behind it. The ultimate goal is to run the Power Tour. I have a THM400 that I had built to handle the hp, but I also don't want to hit every gas station I pass. I was thinking about bolting up a Tremec instead. Was wondering what mods I would have to do. Knowing that It won't bolt up to a Pontiac, I am also nervous about the spacing that would be created by using an adapter plate. I am also open to suggestion for the rear end gears. I would like to keep the original 10 bolt pumpkin for asthetic reasons. Thanks in advance.

I can't say much about the transmissions as I haven't dealt with pontiac stuff, but I could give some ideas for gears. With that th400 you have, at 60mph with 3.73 gears and a 25.5"-26" tall tire you're looking at 3200-3300rpm. A 28" tall tire should take that to about 3000rpm. Mostly any other transmission that has an overdrive will do 60mph with 3.73 gears at 2100rpm on a 26" tire or 1900rpm on a 28" tire.

I would like to keep the RPM's down. I am by far not a mathemetician, are there calculators that can figure out all of that? I also have an old 700r4 sitting on the garage floor. I didn't think to use it. I haven't heard anything good about them with higher hp and torque.

I just use the calculator on here, http://www.fbody.com/calc.htm There's one there for either the tire size as shown on most tires, or height in inches. I'm not positive how the bolt pattern will work out, but otherwise you could use it. I would recommend a build or rebuild of it first though. The 700's aren't known for holding power, stock anyway. The best they can build them for is 700hp at the flywheel. I ran a 700r4 for the last few years that was built to withstand 600hp and I ended up pushing 750-800 through it and it was still functioning perfectly after one season of 11 second runs and another season of 10 second runs. It's still good, but I wanted a more bullet proof trans with a break so I've put a th400 in there. The bottom line here I guess is that to properly run that 700r4 trans you're going to spend probably $2300-$2800 to have it built including a torque converter. Another thing that transmission does is lock-up the torque converter, which your th400 doesn't. As long as the transmission is an '85 or newer you don't have to hook that up, but if it's older than '85 then it's necessary from the risk of overheating. I'd say the best way to have that work is a speed sensing kit, I think B&M makes one. You just adjust the speed when the converter locks.
