Rear main leakage

Posted By: RUWILDE On: 02-26-2008 @ 10:39:45         Reply | Edit
My freshly rebuilt engine is leaking/spraying oil from rear main. Oil pan is tight. I've heard that excessive crank case pressure can cause this. Any ideas???

Yes,excessive crank case pressure will cause that, but if its a new engine, unless you have a problem with the rings or leaking head gaskets you shouldn't have that much pressure. Do you have a working PCV system? If not that can sometimes cause too much pressure in the crank case. If it had enough pressure to blow oil like that though, you would also have a large amount of blowby from the valve covers.

Are you sure its from the rear seal and not one of the oil galley plugs in the back of the block?

Also,if its a Pontiac engine, another thing to check would be the oil pan gasket. On the rubber or cork seal that goes across the rear main cap Pontiac used gaskets of different thickness depending on the oil pan used. Maybe you have the thin seal in place where the thick one should be.
