Camshaft Selection Time

Posted By: 76to70TA On: 01-04-2008 @ 12:15:04         Reply | Edit
This winter I'll be freshening the 400 in my '76 TA. Currently it has #13 heads ported to H-O Racing specifications, an 067 cam with 1.65:1 rockers and an Edelbrock Performer manifold. I want to get 400+ flywheel HP but keep reasonable streetability. This is NOT a drag car. My plans are more along the g-machine tract. Go, turn and stop with the best. Sort of a modern iteration of the old Trans Am series cars with some creature comforts.

My question relates to the camshaft selection. I'm caught between using the 068 HO/RA III cam or the 744 RA III cam. Actually modern version of these cams, probably from Summit Racing. The Summit K2801 has 214/224 duration, .442/.465 lift, 112 LSA and is basically a hi-lift version of the 068 Pontiac cam. The Summit K2802 has 224/234 duration, .465/.488 lift, 114 LSA and is a hi-lift version of the 744 cam.

I've read that the 2801 is one of the most popular replacement cams and works very well. I've not read anything about the 2802 cam. Does anyone have any experience with either of these cams?

As I said I want to have 400+ HP with streetability so I'm leaning toward the 2802. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanx, Stewart

well the 2802 will have a smoother idle due to the lobe seperation. now is that duration @.050 lift? and i'm assuming that the lift specs are w/ the 1.65 rockers.

I know those desktop dynos arent all that accurate, but i went and plugged in your cam specs, along with some mild ported heads. And 9.5:1 and they both can make 400 hp.

But in my opion i would K2802 cause it has more lift. The cam i put in mine has more lift and duration. @ 230/236 and .520/.523 w/ 110 LSA comp cams XE274. The idle is kinda choppy due to the LSA.

Or you can go to Compcams.com and look at their Selection P/N 51-116-3 230/240 516/516 @ .050 lift w/ 114 LSA. I found it to be cheaper to buy from a cam manufacture than a parts warehouse.

Hope that helps, Mike

The durations quoted are at .050" and the lifts are with 1.5 rockers, both quote from the Summit website spec sheets. If I use the 1.65 rockers add 10% more lift.

Tough to beat the prices at Summit. Either cam and lifter kit is $90. These cams are made by Wolverine/Blue Racer which is now part of Crane. I'll check out the CompCams site again.

Depending on the rearend gear you plan to use. If in the 2's use the 068, however, if you are in the 3's use the 744. These two cams will make about the same horsepower, the 744 will move the power band up in the rpm range. Hopes this helps

I've got 3.23's and a 4 speed so I'm leaning toward the 2802 with 1.5 rockers. Although the 2801 with 1.65 may be just as good.

Thanx for the feedback.
