W72 build-up

Posted By: dschroederw72 On: 01-01-2008 @ 10:04:44         Reply | Edit
I just bought my 2nd '78 TA with a W72. This one is an automatic. Anyone have good modifications to get more power out of the engine while maintaining premium fuel and excellent driveability? A friend of mine built his 1979 SE W72 with larger exhaust valves and a nice mild cam. He put it on a dyno at Pontiac Nationals in Norwalk, OH last year and had 272hp at the rear end. I helped him build that engine and I had a lot of input into it. Anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks.

Well that depends largely on the budget you have to work with, what your gears are and what kind of stall you will run...

This is what I would do if it were a budget build:

Shave heads .030
Run KB flat top hyper-Eutectic pistons
These two things should push your compression up to about 9:1.

The Crane H-278-2 cam works amazingly well in Pontiac engines of all stripes. Especially if used with a Rhodes style lifter.

Stick with 1.5:1 roller tip rockers, you could try the 1.65: ratio, but everything I have read shows that stock D-Port heads level out at just under .500 lift. If you get the heads ported, it may be worth it for the extra lift.

Standard issue Edelbrock performer intake will work very well for the RPM range of the above components and will fit under a shaker style hood.

Get the Q-Jet rebuilt by a reputable shop.

The distributor could be recurved to bring advance in sooner. Someone else on this board would be more knowledgable than I for both the Carb and distributer setups.

If you can afford it, swapping the tranny for a 200-4R would represent a huge improvement in both performance and mileage. But a good one with lockup convertor will run over $2k.

I have two friends who ran engines with similar setup to above.

One ran mid 12s the other high 13s. The 12 second car was a 3,500lb stick car with 3.55(posi) and he used mechanical lifters on the cam(lash set to .010I and .012E) and shifted at 6,000rpm. He also used an AFB intake and carb.

The 13 second car was a 4,000lb T350 auto car with 2.73(open) that ran hydraulic lifters and shifted at 5,500rpm. Used Edelbrock performer intake and Q-Jet carb.
