Rear end/Driveshaft HELP!!!!

I just finished intalling a rear end from an 81 camaro axle code PX (3.23) into a 79 trans am. The old axle was original to the car and was a PS code (2.41). I was told that this swap would be a direct bolt on deal with no mods because the camaro rears were the same as the TA's. Everything lined up just as the old one and I got it all hooked up. Then, I got to the driveshaft, and it wouldn't fit into the rear end. The shiny part of the u-joint on the drive shaft (the smaller part that pivots) was too thick to fit into the opening it was supposed to. This part of the rear end was different than that of the old one. I compared the u shaped brackets (that the bolts slide through in order to hold on the driveshaft) on the original rear with those that came with the camaro rear, and they are not as wide as the originals. Does this sound right? How can I fix this? Can I just take of the piece from the original rear end (I think it is called the yolk and it is held on by a huge nut in the middle) and put i and put it on the camaro rear? I need to do something ASAP because my car wants to roll without the driveshaft hooked up so I had to block the tires.

if I understand what you're saying, then the universal joints on the new rear end are different than the ones on your old driveshaft. this seems right, as I had the same problem when I replaced my driveshaft-the new one had a different u-joint. Go down to your parts store and ask them to look up the correct u-joint for both the camaro rear end and firebird driveshaft, then tell them you want a crossover u-joint of those two. This will have the firebird u-joint caps on one side and the camaro u-joint caps on the other. Then you just grease it up, press out the old u-joint from the driveshaft, and press in the new one. --

Will any NAPA parts store be able to get this part? Will this be an easier solution than swapping they yolks?
