I have a 79 Trans AM with a olds 403, I am buying a B.O.P. TH400 trans out of a 72 GTO. I would like to know if I need to modify anything before I buy it. I am pretty sure it will bolt up Ok, but do I need to change the cross-member or the driveshaft? It has a TH350 right now in it. Thanks in advance for any advice! AZTA

If I remember correctly, and my memory isn't is good as it used to be, you will have to do some modifications to make the TH400 work in your '79. My question would be, what is wrong with the TH350. It is a strong transmission and will hold up. I am running a TH350 behind my 455 Pontiac and it works great. We estimate I am making around 370 to 380 Hp and 460-480 tq at the flywheel and regulary run 12.50s in 80 degree weather and 12.30s in nice cool weather and I haven't had any problems with it. I hope that this helps.

thanks for the response Firebird455. I am torn between having the TH350 rebuilt and changing it out with the TH400. The previous owner used the car for towing and apparently put a lot of stress on the 350. It has a lot of issues shifting now. I have access to a cheap TH400 I am just weighing out the two ideas and trying to come up with an informed decision.

to put the 400 in, you will need to change the drive sahft, the 400 is longer, may have to change the cross member, but may be able to just slide it back. should be a straight bolt up to the motor, (not sure on the flex plate bolt circle)
Have you given any thought to a 700 r4? With gas prices the way they are it can make a difference quickly if you drive the TA much. I've run them hard behind some fairly strong motors and the low first gear hurrls you off the line...
