Hey guys,
I've got everything done except for the installation of my driveshaft. I was wondering if there is any last minute tips from any experts that have done these installs?? Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Where to do first, second, third...etc???
I've never done an install on a driveshaft, but a couple buddies of mine have. Is there any other precautions that i need to be aware of?
Any feedback would be great!

Mine was painted black, so I wrapped it in towels before I stuck it up in there to make sure it didn't get all scuffed up...
It's pretty straightforward. Just slip the tranny end on, then stick the u-joint together and bolt the caps on.
You had it balanced, right? --

Make sure there are clips of some sort on the axle end and that they are centering the universal. -- The crap gas wonder: 1982 Z28, forged 10:1 383, ported 23* trick flow heads, 246/254 .558/.558 hyd. roller, 3.73's, 3500 stall

We didn't get around to doing the driveshaft install this weekend....we were having some problems with my distributor not delivering any spark, but i think we got that taken care of now.
Here's my case...i got 2 different driveshafts. One that was used in my old setup w/ my th-400 tranny and i got one from a buddy that he used for his th-350 setup. He told me that i just needed to swap out the yokes with my old driveshaft and everything else should be good to go (b/c my old yoke is a little longer and it wouldn't fit). We did a little measuring and it appeared to look about right. So are the yokes that much different in shapes/size ?? I noticed my old th-400 yoke wouldn't even fit over the th-350 tranny...it was too small. -- 1967 Camaro (Z-28 Clone): 327 Bored .03 over, TH-400, Double Hump Heads, Holley 600cfm Double Pumper, Scorpion Intake, Accel 8mm wires, 78K miles...restoration is underway.

The 350 yoke and 400 yoke are different and not interchangable.
If the tranny you are using is used, it would be a good time now to pull the tail cone off the tranny and have the rear bushing and rear seal replaced. if it's a rebuilt tranny then you should be ok.
Before you install the shaft, Check the yoke and make sure it is clean. You can use brake drum cleaner sprayed into the yoke and then blow it out so no grit gets into the tranny. The outside surface of the yoke should be polished and completely clean. If it is not, use some emery cloth to lightly polish it up. If there are deep wear paterns from the seal on the outside of the yoke, get a new yoke. Use a light and take a look at the splines inside the yoke. they should look the same thickness all the way up into the yoke. With use, the spline will wear.
Look over the shaft and note the clips used to hold the joints into the yoke. (After you run the shaft for a while take a look and make sure they are still there!, they can and if loose will fly off)
Check out the joints, they have grease fittings. If they dont and the joints are not new, go buy new ones with grease fittings. otherwise you will be back down there soon changing them when they fail from lack of grease.
Check out the rear end yoke. there should be tabs on the sides where the u-joint fits into the yoke. make sure the joint fits snuggly in between the tabs. otherwise the joint can push itself off center and cause problems. If there are no tabs, then you need u-joints that have clips on the inside of the joint to keep the caps from flying off.
If in dought, find the local drive shaft shop and ask.
take a look at the rear joint bolts/joint tabs or u bolts and nuts. if they are mangled up or worn, replace them.. $10.00 spent here is a very wise investment. clean them up good with brake drum cleaner and blow them off.
a word of caution. As the rear wheels move up and down the yoke will slide in and out of the tranny a small amount. Ideally the yoke should be almost fully bottomed out when the shaft and tranny are on a center line with each other. however the yoke should be around 3/4 of the way into the tranny with the wheels on the ground. If not then things can go wrong. The transmission of power from the tranny to the shaft is through the splines where the yoke and tranny output shaft meet. too little spline contact will cause the yoke to wear rapidly and cause the yoke splines to fail.
to install
Block the wheels and put the tranny in neutral.
Apply a thin film of ATF or vasoline to the rear tranny seal lip just before you slide the yoke in. This will help protect the seal from being damadged from a dry installation.
Slide the shaft in easy, some yokes will bottom out on the seal when pushed all the way in and rip the seal. align the rear joint and make sure the caps are fully seated.
Intall the bolts or u bolts, USE BLUE LOCTITE on the threads with new lock washers. run the nuts/ bolts in finger tight then snug them down evenly about a 1/4 turn a side until tight.
Grease the joints.
Start it up, and check the tranny fluid.
Drive it a little and check for leaks
Check the shaft to make sure that no u-joint clips flew off and that the bolts and hardware are still ok
If you don't have a drive shaft loop, get one. if you plan on running it hard, you can't beat the $35.00 for one. it's one of those things you don't need until you get in a siuation where you need it and the front joint fails, comes apart and the shaft burries itself in the asphalt an pole vaults you into the ditch..believe me it is not a fun feeling...
