Exhaust Manifold Valve 1980?

I have removed most all smog equip. from my 1980 Formula, non Turbo 301. The Cat and EGR must stay but smog pump etc are going.
However, there is a valve/spacer between the drivers side exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe that has a vacuum line running to it.
Does this vacuum line need to be in place and what is the spacer/valve?
Thanks!

I just did the same thing. I just put the valave back without the line. The butterfly just stays open. I think the valve was meant to help the engine during warm up. -- Perfect ain't perfect!

Back in the day, it was called a "heat riser valve". Later known as an "early fuel evaporation valve". It puts exhaust heat through the crossover between the heads through the intake manifold for cold start drivability and fuel economy.
