Caddy 500" in a 1981 Camaro

Posted By: Alptraum On: 01-04-2008 @ 19:02:17         Reply | Edit
I've heard it's been tested and works, and frankly, I like the 81's more than I do the 3rd Gen.s ... That'd set the 3rd Gen.s at #2 in my all time favorite cars list ...

So yeah. I need to buy an 81 Camaro, I live in Ferndale, WA 98248, and, well, here:

1.) Do you think I could do it well with $3000-$3500 in the engine?
2.) Do you think it would fit without a lot of machining?
3.) Do you have a Camaro I could buy?
4.) Any thoughts on it?

Please comment, no matter what you've got to say -- and if you live around here and would like to help or just have a shop where I could do it ... I'd love to do just that!

Oh, I'm doing this for my senior project next year, to graduate. The major engine overhauling wouldn't be until next January or so, I think, but the car I'd like to start working on as soon as possible. Maybe May or June? Until then I'll be looking for a car and an engine.

Thanks!
Please respond!

I'd personally just go with a 454 and stroke it. Engine mounts would work, transmission would bolt up, and the lines would be easier to route. And if you put 3000-3500 into a 454 it would be a badass engine. Hell if your around me I'd help you if you dont have any engine experience. Oh wait, you live in freakin' washington. Move here to Illinois and your set.

I'm in the process a building up a 454 for my 80 Berlinetta and it will EASILY be in the 500 HP range, and behind that will be a T56 transmission.

How much are you putting into the 454?

See, some of the reasons I want to use the 500 are:

300hp 500tq stock (Or so)
8.2L stock, 8.3L bored
500 goddamn cubic inches
I could probably also get 500HP with a few K into it ...

But tell me more about the 454. How much can I bore it over? What are the stock HP/TQ figures?

And tell me about the T56. I'm gonna be using the TH400 until I have the cash to buy a manual that can stand behind that engine ... Is the T56 a manual? Or 3 or 4 speed auto?

I really like Caddy 500's, but if the headers and all that will cost so much it'll drain the money (and power) I can put into the actual engine, I'll go with the 454 if I'll get a stronger end product.

Is the 454 aluminum core? I assume they make Camaro headers for a Chevy 454? Or would I need to get those machined?

etc etc --- Thanks in advance!

The T56 is a 6 speed manual transmission. It came in the Dodge viper, and the 93+ camaros... A very healthy, strong transmission.

I've got about 900 in the 454, that's not counting the actual engine. i picked up the actual engine for about 600.

And the 454 is over 300 HP stock I believe. I take it you're sticking with carburation?

Get forged and rods and you'll be fine with 500 HP. Dont use stock pistons or rods with that much power, you'll end up sending shrapnel through the engine.

Stock heads are fine on the 454, just get them polished if not bored. You can take the bore up pretty high. I was thinking maybe up to 1.00??? I may be wrong as that is pretty damn high. If you're looking for major power stroke the 454 to a 496.

You can go wtih just regular bigblock longtubes on an 81 camaro. If your not used to older cars you're going to realize it's a shitload easier to mess with than new cars.

You can't get the 454 in alluminum unless you get it from a new block manufacurer. That block alone would run you 4k.

imo the best 454 to get is out of a truck, longer stroke so its going make more torque, almost always 4 bolt mains. as for boring , the max bore i believe takes you to 468 and then if you were to stroke it that would end up at a 496, but i like your idea of a caddy engine, if my 355 ever goes, im either doing a 331 or a 500 caddy into the malibu, i doubt the 454 in the nova would go that soon

If you can drive it to the supermarket and back without having to tear down the motor, it's a street car

The truck block doesn't have a longer stroke,it has a taller deck which requires a longer piston that has 3 compression rings instead of 2 like the regular pistons have.

Would the 454 fit easily into a 91 RS? I just found a sweet deal on one ... and, hey, it's pretty nice, too.

Oh, and the alternative to Carbeuration is Fuel Injection, no?

Is there anyway to install that for less than a hundred or two? And does it help that much?

And what exactly does stroking an engine do? Is it increasing the stroke or decreasing? And how does it help?

And would I have to get headers and all that machined for the 91 RS? Or could I use ""regular bigblock longtubes"" for that?

And would having a larger piston slow it down a bit, being that it has more weight to move? Or what does that do?

Posted By: RainDownMyBlues On: 02-24-2006 @ 19:47:23     Reply | Top | Edit
You're going to have a much larger headache fitting a 454 into a 91 Camaro than you would the second generation. The second generation had huge engine bays and a lack of computer control.

Fuel injection IS the alternative to carburation, but if you're not real keen on it I wouldn't screw with it. And you're not going to fuel inject an engine for that kind of money. It would require a new manifold, injectors, fuel pump, amoung other things.

It depends on the mounts in the RS if the regular long tubes would work in a 91.

I wouldn't waste my time with a 500 caddy motor. Sure it might make a lot of torque in stock form but thats about it. They do not like to rev very high at all. Also, the entire bottom end of those engines are cast, which is ok if your going to keep the motor stock and not over-rev it. Third, performance parts for those engines are very hard to find, and you might end up spending a lot of $$ getting parts machined for it. Stick with a 454.

If you dont like my driving, then get off your porch.

wrong somewhat, parts arent that hard to find just expensive, and you can make any engine rev high, i like the uniqueness of the caddy and the fact its still smaller then a BBc

You can make any car fast with money but you cant make any car look or sound like it will tear your heart out, eat it and then bang your significant other.
