77/78 Firebird formula

Posted By: huntertharp On: 01-02-2008 @ 10:00:32         Reply | Edit
i'm lookin at a 77 formula which has been sitting in a friends yard for years, it has no hood, and no interior. the floor board has 2 holes about 6 inches around (+/-). Would it be worth the trouble of restoration and could it be restored? Havn't decoded the vin yet, not sure which of the 2 years it is, friend can't remember.

depends on what you mean by worth the trouble. Formulas were always rarer than trans ams, and even rarer than base birds a couple years. I personally think 78 formulas are the second best looking second gens, right after 70-73 trans ams. They won't bring as much money as a comparable t/a, though, usually.

I like them because you just don't see them anymore. I've seen probably ten nice second gens in my real life, and only one - mine - has been a formula.

I also feel less bad about hacking my car up because it will probably never be worth huge cash if I restore it.

In summary, buy it if you want to build a car. Don't buy it if you want to turn a profit.

Anything can be restored, though!

I have a 77 Formula and I think that the hood styling on them alone make them one of the best Firebirds. It's nice to have the matching #'s engine too. If the grills are still there provided they are the originals you can determine the year. The 77 had the honeycomb style grill, where as the 78 had more of a diamond shape to them. Other then that I havent seen any other major differences. There might be a difference in the center cap for the stock Rally's but I don't know, I have the classic snowflakes to wrap around mine. I have an extra hood if you decide to get the car and start on it.

another good thing is, if you need floor pan parts, you can get them from most all 2nd gen f-body. i like the hood on my 76 better than any of the others because, my hood scoops are larger, and i perfer the round head lights verses the square.
