Transmission selection

Hey, I wondering what transmission would be best for my project. I have a 81 firebird that needs a new motor and trans. Currently the trans is a turbo 350. I have a 75 poncho 400 that i'll probably have an engine shop build up. So what trans anyone recommend, another 350, a 400, or trying to fit an overdrive trans (700R4 or 200R4) in the car. I would like an auto for now. A stick maybe in the distant future though. thanks

Also, what gears would work best. I plan for the car to be a driver and maybe only race it occasionally if at all. Definitly not a full on racer

For rear end gears I'd go 2.73's or 3.08's max if your not going to have an overdrive and you plan on taking it on the highway. The tranny is up to you. -- 94Z A4

well it all depends on how much power you wanna get outta that 400 if its not gonna be to over the top 450 or more then a TH350 will work fine, any more or even real close id recomend a TH400 just to be safe, and as far as the overdrive transmissions i don't think they could really handle the power of even a mild 400... so if you really want an overdrive i'd suggest getting a gear vendor unit on the back of a TH350 or TH400 -- 78' formula- Stock daily driver... but wont stay stock for long
