TH350 Install on my LT1 Questions??

Posted By: Airbornec507 On: 12-27-2007 @ 18:17:35         Reply | Edit
Hey folks. I've decided to get a TH350 tranny due to my 4L60E troubles and thought I'd get some good advice from folks that actually have them. I am looking to get a well built tranny from this guy:

"This is a decked out GM TH350 transmission with a full manual, reverse pattern, transbrake valve body. Our transmission features the following:

Transbrake valve body
Full manual shift
Reverse shift pattern
Heavy duty 36 element sprag & direct drum assy
Deep pan
High performance frictions
Rated to 700 HP
Dyno tested prior to shipment
6 month warranty
FREE 9.5" custom stalled TH350 converter with purchase of the transmission (anti balloon plates, fully furnace brazed, Torrington bearings) "

He says that I will have no problem with my set up on a 200 shot. Just read over my post and let me know if I need to change anything or if I could do something an easier way. I plan on going with a 9" tailshaft and using my stock crossmember if possible. Also I'm going with a Spohn Torque arm and custom length Denny's Nitrous ready Drive Shaft. Also I will use a wire tube to link a vacuum hose from the tranny to the intake. Not sure but will my flywheel have any trouble hooking up to the torque converter. Also I'm under the impression that I need a 27 spline input shaft. Not sure if that realy matters. Also I'm assuming that I can just ignore the speed sensor in the tranny since mine is registered with an exciter ring on the rear differential.

Ok last but not least. As I'll normally be using a 200 shot at the track and driving the car to and from the track and car shows up to an hour away, will the tranny take a 350 shot? I may do that if I have a big race since the engine is built to take it. Will definately NOT be the norm though.

THANKS for any and all critiques and comments you guys can give.

i, personally, wouldn't put the thm350 in your car . i would find a good builder and have them build you a good 4L60E. you can get them that will handle the horse power and your juice ,but, you have to tell the builder what you want and what you've got to get what you want.

^I've had 2 4L60E trannies built to handle 600hp/tq and it didn't last for 3 months N/A. I still haven't even gotten to putting the nitrous on it yet cuzz I've torched 1 stock 60E and 2 "built" 4L60E's and blown $2600 on them. Check my post on Beware PATC and you'll see some of my complaints on it.

I've been recomended by a guy that races a Pro Mod car to go with the Power Glide. He said he ran a TH350 for a long time before the switch and that the TH350 would handle my plans no problem.

On another note I'm interested in why you think I should steer clear of the TH350?

primarily for your long distance drives , you lose a full gear and you may do some damage on long trips . if you still want a three speed you may be beter off with a thm 400. i suggest talking to your local trusted trans shop . allthough the power glide trans is a very good option for racing. they can be built to handle almost any power you can through at it.

if you're in the military and you hvae a hobby shop on base you could talk to the guys who run the shop they can generaly tell who the best shops are . you might try calling jeg's ,or summit , or b&m for tech advise and suggestions.

the key is to find a good tranny guy, I would stick with the 4l60e transmission for the od. I have yet to hear of a decent tranny shop around me, I always do it myself. Atleast most of them around hear ideas of a built tranny is replacing the clutches with some aftermarket ones and putting a shift kit in it, If you want a 4l60e to last you need to replace the weak parts like the sunshell that is known for failure. replace all the bushings and seals, at least tranny shops around here dont even replace the bushings. Best thing would be to do is to readup or buy a book that throughly goes through the transmission that will point out the weak links.Hope this helps.

The 4L60 is basically a TH350 with overdrive. If you're already breaking them, then I would got with a TH400. You've already spent a lot for the troubles you've had so get the strongest.

i gotta go with the man above me, i have a th350 and i love it but if your blowing a 4L60 then get the TH400 they can handle whatever you throw at em and last forever, but your still gonna have a loud ride on the freeway with out that overdrive but if your only driving to and from the track you aint got no problems, and no i don't think the TH350 could handle your 350 shot your 200 may be pushing it but a TH400 will be your best bet at a nitrous friendly transmission
