I have a 74 trans am with a 400 small block and a turbo 400 transmission. The car right now has flowmaster 40 series mufflers. I'm getting a 450 lift cam and a performer intake, headers, and 4.10 gear. I am wondering what my car should run in a quarter and if this will be a decent setup. I got the cam for free, the intake will cost $20, headers $50, and the gears i will have to pay full price because those will come from a store. The other stuff is my brothers and he has them on his Trans Am right now and he bought bigger and better because his car has sit for 3 years. The items have been used about 30 mins maybe. Let me know what you think my car will run or any thing i need to get or any hits on what to do would be nice. Thank you for your help!

no i have never taken my car to the track. I have raced many cars tho. My car beat a 2000 Mustang GT 5 speed with Flowmaster Exhaust. The guy shifted pretty good and my car is auto and a 3speed at that and we went from a stop and his front wheels were at my back wheels and we stayed that way all the way till i was coming on a van at about 100+. Then we were going 60 and he threw it down and i punched it and we were dead even. He pulled next to me and was telling me my car was fast for an old car. I said not to bad of a stang lol. That was when my car ran good and his car still had the 30 day tag lol. His windows are tinted dark and i couldnt tell who was driving and it turned out to be his girl when we went out to race and she did just as good as he did LOL (no offence to girls). The 99 GTs run 14.1 and all my car had was flowmaster exhaust and i dont even have headers. Anything else that might help you figure it out? Oh i have a rodchester quadregete carb. Everyone says they suck but my uncle knows how to fix them and make them great. I dont if it will be able to work with the mods.

depending on cfm the carb will be fine, and q-jet carbs are great theyre just a PAIN in the ass to tune and adjust, as for keeping with him/her id say your car is about a 14.5-15.0 but dont quote me im not too sure -- SPEED KILLS! DRIVE AN IMPORT ,LIVE FOREVER

Well what do u think all that stuff will do to my times? I beat a 2000 mustang gt. His front wheels were at my back wheels. He had flowmaster exhaust. The 99 mustang gts run 14.1 stock. so i would think his would run atleast 14 flat... but im just wondering if i should put this stuff in my car and see if it makes a big enought difference or if i should just wait and restore the car to original and just make a newer transam my speed car... thanks for the input

You should never base your cars speed on what kind of car you can beat/keep up with on the street. For example in my stock 2004 Grand Prix GTP Comp G I raced a 2004 mustang with headers intake and exhaust and we were neck and neck. That doesn't mean that my GP runs 14s. Also keep in mind that the average driver is not going to be able to get their car to run as fast as the magazines.

I understand that i was just thinking that maybe that would give someone some kind of idea on what my car should run and what it can do.

Its kind of tough to give an estimate of how fast a car will be based only on parts. A lot has to do with the driver, a lot has to do with traction and a lot has to do with tuning. To really get an idea you should dyno your car to get the rear wheel horsepower, that is the best predictor. For example a C5 Corvette (with net crank horsepower of 345) puts out about 280 rear wheel horsepower stock, with a 6 speed a 3.42 rear gear and a curb weight of 3300 lbs it can run mid to low 13s in the quarter.
Your car is probably close to 3800 lbs. Your TH400 has a higher first gear than a 6 speed, but the 4.10s would make up for that. SO assuming you are a good driver and get decent traction you would probably need around 330 rear wheel horsepower to keep up with the Corvette. This may not sound like a lot, but we are talking rear wheel horsepower not gross crankshaft horsepower. Assuming a 20% loss due to a fan, alternator and drivetrain slippage you would need about 420 gross horsepower at the crank to run mid to low 13s. With slicks you would be in the 12s.
These are all guesses and estimates. The only real way to tell how fast your car will be is to take it to the track. But a very general rule for just about anyone is that your car is slower and less powerful than you think it is.

Well i am debating on weather or not to sell my lifted 78 ford truck just to build my motor for my trans am. All im wanting to do to it is put a little cam in it, performer intake, summit headers, and 4.10 gears. I will also get traction bars and subframe connectors and stuff like that to support my frame. My brother said that gears made a hugh difference in his trans am. Im just trying to get some ideas on if this is a good setup for driving it around whenever and being able to beat some cars

ya it really sucked... my uncle made a bracket for it. we gota reinforce it if i put some performance parts on it. The bad part is my car is a unibody frame i cant go get a frame off another car and put my body on it. I have to redo a full car . I love the feel of driving my 74 Transam and i like the way it has some get up and go. I dont know what to do. I dont wana get rid of the car but i dont know how im gona fix all this without throwing TONS of money in it which i dont mind if i had it.

You really need to get your car looked at by a professional so you can find out if it can be repaired and made safe again. The last thing you want it a car that hauls ass, but is a rolling death trap. Cars are replaceable, people aren't. A car that has a weak underside could fold up like a tin can in an accident.

Yea but i dont know where to take my car to get looked at because i know anything on a car can be fixed its just gona take money and time. I wana get my car fixed but i dont know where to go to have them make a new frame or replace parts and stuff. I can do the motor, transmission, interior, gears, most of the stuff just dont wana mess with the frame and body.

You can't fix everything on a car. When I was working on my auto body certificate I brought my friends Mustang in to work on it. The whole floor board was rusted and falling out and the seats were about to fall out the bottom of the car. My instructor took one look at it and he said that it could be repaired, but it could never be made safe again, he said the whole structural integrity of the car was gone. This is the problem with unibody cars.
