Vin # confusion Posted By: ChazOutlaw On: 12-30-2007 @ 22:42:57 Reply | Edit Ok I tried decoding my camaro's VIN.. but something's not right...my VIN# is 1G1AP87L5BLxxxxx. Ok 1st digit, is 1 thats chevy...2nd digit should be either Q,(sport coupe,rally sport, or Z28) or S (lt, or berlinetta after 78) but my 2nd digit is a G. 3rd and 4th digits should be 87 (2 dr coupe/sport coupe) but mine's 1A. wtf? %th digit is engine code should be L (350) or U (305) but i got a damn P.( no thats not the code for 6 banger i researched it) 6th digit is model yr, 8=78. I'm ok with that, thought the car was an 80, but older is better. I didn't dig into the next 5 digits yet, since most of these are whacked. and the last 6 are just the run number for that plant. -- common sense isn't so common Posted By: ChazOutlaw On: 10-09-2005 @ 23:02:56 Reply | Top | Edit Ok I figured out the engine code. P= 1977 350 ci. Must be it was common back then for GM to install last yrs engines in new cars. -- Hooker headers, edel perf RPM intake, edelbrock carb, 2 1/5" pipe with x-pipe into 3" flowmasters, harwood 6" cowl. Car's an 81, with a 350, built in van nuys calif. And I'd assume it's a legit Z28 by looking at all the option stuff on the build sheet. God Vin # research makes me feel like an idiot.
