here is one for you motorheads.....after i bought the 67 bird i noticed that there was no pcv system setup....just the valve sticking out of the valley cover. i put one in and my car promptly started to blow massive amounts of blue/grey smoke from both tailpipes (more from passenger side). the car did seem to run a little better though. naturally i suspected a hidden valve stem seal problem....or worse, rings. i removed the tube from the intake and plugged the hole and the smoke went away, but now there is smoke coming from the TWO breathers on the passenger side and not the ONE on the drivers. (the car seems to sputter alot at idle now) can anyone think of why someone would set up their motor to run without pcv ??? what are the results of driving with no pcv for untold miles ??? is it rings ? valve stem seals ? bearings ? i will add to the post in a few days after i complete a compression test....if anyone has any other clues or things to check let me know and i will explain the results.......the car did force oil out of some gaskets with no pcv but nothing that did not look like normal gasket failure.
any clues would really be appreciated....

most of the older pont. i've seen didn't run a pcv ,but did have large breather filters on one or both valve covers. if you have a pcv system it would be located in the valley cover below the intake between the coolant cross over and the first intake runner.it's not a bad thing to run a pcv system but you can't run it into an open valve cover , there must be a baffle in the cover to seperate the oil from the presure -- 76 formula yellow/black ramair hood 400 poncho punched.030 street/strip built m38 trans conveted rear end to a 4wdb 3.23posi

Was your PCV valve in the VALVE cover or the VALLEY cover?? If it was in an un-baffled VALVE cover it will most definitely suck oil. There shouldn't be that much oil in the valley cover for it to suck oil out of it,but it is possible. Do the compression test and try a new PCV valve, and make sure it is in the VALLEY cover.
You say you have 2 breathers in the valve cover? Gotta be aftermarket valve covers. Sounds like it might be a set of M/Ts. I've never seen a factory Pontiac cover with 2 holes.
A couple bad points about no PCV system are:
always oil on the valve covers(from the pressure inside the engine)
if you have a little too much blowby, and it sounds like you might,it WILL blow the seals out eventually(valve cover gaskets, main seals, etc.) --

thanks for the response guys....let me give you a little more info.
there is a lot of mods and upgrades to this motor which makes me wonder if not setting up the pcv was intentional. yes the valve is in the valley cover (actually at the rear near distributor). and yes they are moroso valve covers.....someone drilled a hole for an extra breather !!! with the extra venting is it possible i will not build up too much pressure ??? please explain in more detail what a baffled cover is (i was thinking of trying to move the pcv to the valve cover to see if i had similar results). if i had bad rings or dried up valve stem seals do you think i would still have smoke from the pipes with no pcv set-up ?? i would be happy to learn the intake is just sucking oil from somewhere and i am not having some sort of horrible engine failure....maybe i am paranoid but would someone be smart enough to know that eliminating the pcv and adding and extra breather or two would hide major engine trouble ?

hereis a link to my "website" and if you click on the 67firebird page there is a photo or two of the engine before i put the pcv in.

the only way to explain baffles is to have you go down to your local performance shop and look at another set of covers that have baffles. they can show you the difference and what it should look like when you put your pcv in the cover. -- 76 formula yellow/black ramair hood 400 poncho punched.030 street/strip built m38 trans conveted rear end to a 4wdb 3.23posi

here is the answer.........the engine was set up for 1/4 mile passes. the PCV system was replaced by two hoses than ran from the valve covers to the header collectors via a valve that only lets air in at a set rate. this allows the engine vaccum to pull crankcase gasses out and avoids contamination of the intake with junk blowby ect...(these ports on the headers are where the emisions and smog crap would hook to a later model engine.)
i am not sure about all the info on this setup and it seems to be used by strip only drivers, if anyone know what the scoop on this gig is, please reply......

If its going to be a street car I'd go back to the factory setup. --
