Any thoughts on these heads?

Posted By: 76FORMULA400 On: 12-27-2007 @ 12:55:49         Reply | Edit
i may be able to purchase some heads for a good price and i just wanted to see if it was worth it. the first set are '72 #7H1 castings off of a lemans 2 barrel 350. the others are '71 #94 castings off of a t-37 lemans 350. they both have 2.11/1.77 valves and 96cc chambers. im either building a 400 or 455 and i didnt know if these heads would be a good choice. the cam has 282/292 duration(224/234 duration at .050)and .465/.488 lift with 114 degrees of lobe seperation. i'll be using 1.65 ratio HARLAND SHARP ROLLER ROCKERS(its my buddies company , they're the best in my opinion) a 800cfm holley dbl pumper and a torkerII intake. im not sure of the pistons yet,or compression ratio, so any suggestions are appreciated. does this sound like a good combo? what hp/tq can i expect?

If you use them on a 400, I'd have 'em milled .040-.060 to get them down to just over 80cc. On a 455 they'd be fine.

what compression ratio would that give me? what pistons should i use to get a 10:1 ratio with those heads?

Posted By: arcticz28 On: 09-12-2005 @ 00:03:52     Reply | Top | Edit
I wouldnt go above 9.5 to 1 with a pontiac iron headed engine. Above that you start running into detonation issues unless your constantly running a high octane fuel. Milling those heads should give you around 9-9.5 to 1 which is what you want.

but which pistons should i use in a 400 to get that compression? i want to use a quality forged piston, but i dont want to break the bank doing it.

when i built my 400 the machine shop told me that all you can get for a pont. was forged pistons. you may be able to get domed verses flat top , but talk to your machine shop for better and more accurate advise

I believe the compression i was talking about is with stock style pistons, whether they be forged or cast, or hypereutectic (however you spell that)

do you know of any place where i can get forged pistons for a pontiac 350? summit and jegs dont list them. i can get the 72 7H1 heads with the motor for only $150.

I thought you were building a 400 or 455? I wouldnt waste my money on a 350. Heres a link to a bunch of forged pistons on summit, I dont know the year or overbore of the engine your building so here's the link:

http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?Ntt=pontiac+pistons&Ntk=KeywordSearch&DDS=1&searchinresults=false&N=0&target=egnsearch.asp

Also if you just search the questions your asking on these forums, there is an endless amount of info at the PY forums, thats where I learn most of my stuff.

why not a 350? they still make monster tq and i can always swap the parts to the 400 or 455 when i get it. i already have most of the parts and the 350 is cheap and i'm dyin to have a motor together. besides, im sure there is a stroker kit out there for the 350...right?

it cost the same to build a 400 or a 455 as it does the 350. not to mention the difference in the size of the piston just from the 350 to the 400. don't build twice what you can do once. i just put over 5K into my motor. i still can't drive it on the street yet. but that's my fault. it sounds great though.

I agree, it will cost the same to build a 350 as a 400 or 455. Check around, people still have 400 and 455 short-blocks and entire engines for sale. Ken Keefer (Pontiac Dude) and Jim Lahart (Mr. P-Body) can give you all the help and parts you need. Check out the Performance Years bulletin board. Checkout the "Pontiac Street" and "Performance parts for sale" sections.

I've got the .030 over 400 block, crank, stock rods, valley covers, front cover and water pump, windage tray, valve covers, oil pan, edelbrock intake, holley carbs, and various heads. Most of what you need to build a 400...All stock Pontiac stuff ready for refurbish. Just built a killer 455, don't need these anymore...price negotiable.

The heads are #13 and 7K3's. The #13's came off my running 400, and the 7K3's were taken off a blown 400 a buddy had. Also have a power steering pump and alternator not listed above. If you take everything, I'll let it all go for $650 (somewhat negotiable, need to clear the garage). I have a set of rare #670 heads with valves and springs in a box also. They have been cleaned and checked, and are rebuildable. I would sell them for $350. Where are you located? If close, I'll deliver.

670s are not actually rare. I've had a couple sets and still have a set laying in my garage. My brother also has a '67 428 with 670s. They are well worth your asking price though.
