Tilt steering play in 79 RS Camaro

Posted By: JeffMerriman On: 01-01-2008 @ 22:18:51         Reply | Edit
I just bought a 79 Rally Sport Camaro and the tilt steering wheel is wobbly. The previous owner says there is bearing that goes down in into the column (pull the horn assembly, blinker assembly, set to side and pull it out). Are any of you familiar with this? He says it will have to be lined up perfectly and tapped in with a mallot. Does this sound right? Any help would be appreciated.

there are 4 bolts that secure the piece inside the column that the tilt section pivots off of.
you need a wheel puller, a compressor for the locking theft plate, and a pivot pin remover.
And of course some basic hand tools

the 4 bolts are of the E-TORX design which means special socket but should be ava. at your local parts store. maybe you'll get lucky and yours maybe a regular bolt head if someone changed them before. pull each bolt out one at a time and put high strenghth lock tight on the bolts
